===== Spancrystals =====
The single most important development in modern Magitech, Spancrystals are a unique formation of magically infused mineral that accumulates under ideal circumstances within the Span. These crystals are valued for their ability to be charged with - and hold - pure magical energy, which can then be expended in other sources.

Every major Magitechnical develop of the past century has relied upon Spancrystals as a means of power supply, either as an embedded element or as a replaceable battery. This technology ranges from the Engines of Spanships - which possess a cradle of Spancrystals at their core - to the firing mechanisms for Arclock weapons, and every mundane item in between.

However, because of the events of the Foulheart, where Spancrystals were used to secret corruptive energy across the Shards, Spancrystals are now a regulated commodity within the Accord. Trade and ownership of Spancrystals requires a level of registration and licensing, and being caught with unlicensed Spancrystals is a serious criminal offense within Accord territory, and in the territory of its allies.

==== Recharging Spancrystals ====
Spancrystals are great reservoirs of magical capability, but do not generate power on their own, and need to be actively recharged. Thankfully, they can be recharged in a number of ways;

=== Natural Charge ===

Spancrystals can be recharged naturally, though it requires specific conditions and circumstances. As the name suggests, Spancrystals have a particular affinity, and are created of and by, the Span.

By the nature of how Shards exist in the Span, the energy of the Span is too diluted by the Shards themselves to empower a a spancrystal on its own - but when exposed to the raw void of the Span a spancrystal slowly regains charge; pulling power from the Span itself.

When exposed to the Span, a Spancrystal regains 1d4 Charges for every 4 hours exposed in that manner. This cannot occur while on a Shard, unless the Shard has an attribute that suggests otherwise.

=== Magical Storms ===

Magical storms are not uncommon in the Shards, and they present a valuable opportunity to restore the energy in Spancrystals. When exposed to a Magical Storm for at least one hour, a spancrystal regenerates charges based on the storm type,

=== Recharging Services and Stations ===

With the increase demand for Magitechnical devices, and the propagation of personal devices such as Castcoins and Heartlinks, there has become a market for the charging of Spancrystals. While not cheap, the bulk storage of magical energy at Spancrystal Banks are available for those who need them.

At any Spancrystal Bank, you can recharge 1 Charge of any licensed Spancrystal for 10 Marks.

Kipptech, Berus’ premier magitechnical development firm, has unveiled a series of fully automated Spancrystal charging stations across Tidehold, New Berus, and other major colonies. A boxlike booth found along major roads, a KCS Machine can quickly charge a Spancrystal, for the same price as found at any Spancrystal Bank!
