The Outburst
736 EE
Subsequently, in 736 EE - nearly 30 years later - during the signing of a Peace Treaty between the Ch’toklan Host and the Manijahu Covenant, waves of magical energy seemed to tear through the Shards. Identical in nature to the energy released by the destruction of the Foulheart, the waves of energy rent massive scars into the faces of shards throughout the span - from Masreya to Vasselern.
Creatures and people caught in the waves of energy were twisted, mutated, and enraged by this sudden burst of Corruption energy, before being overwhelmed by a deep malaise and despair. Worse still, the scars rent by this outburst did not fade or heal - permanently saturated by twisted magics.
Believed now to have been the aftershock of the destruction of the Foulheart, this magical event was named the Outburst, and marked the final throes of death for the long fallen Infinite. Modern Arcanists believe these scars to be related to the Sorrows - the region of dark and twisted space near the ruins of the Foulheart, and have thus named them Sorrow Scars for this relation.
While the peoples of the Shards quickly recovered from the initial burst of dark magics, these Sorrow Scars persisted. Creatures that wander into them are twisted by their harrowing magic, and often emerge to attack or assail the surrounding lands.
