The creation of Nerasa required a massive amount of magical power, channeled into the nascent world by the Infinites and presumably sourced from the Infinite Realm. As the world matured and the magical forces woven by the Infinites developed and expanded, Nerasa became more and more saturated with magical power of every known aspect and origin.

When the world was shattered, this energy collapsed in on itself and formed what is now known as the Core. Existing in a manner reminiscent of a star, this ball of potent magical energy has become intermingled and neutralized into a source of pure, unaspected magical power - Core magic.

It is believed that from this Core that most magic in the remnant Shards of Nerasa can source its power. Indeed, as the single most potent Infinite Source, magics both innate and intentional are often powered by the Core - and that life as it exists today would not have been possible without the Core providing heat, life, and energy to the Shards.

Basking in the light of the Core is revitalizing to most life forms, and many use it’s appearance to mark the passing of time and season.

On an individual level, the rotation of Shards themselves are often responsible for the perception of night and day on any specific shards. As a shard rotates away from the Core and its light is obscured, the shard and its denizens experience night, and likewise when they bask in its light during the day.

Because of this process, not every shard experiences night and day at the same rate, time, or even at all; For example, while Vasselern experiences predictable day and night cycles of roughly 12 hours, Berus has no rotation at all and while one surface experiences perpetual daylight, the other experiences perpetual night.

In the descriptions of regions and shards in the following chapters, indications of when day and night begin and end are described - if they where they vary from the standard.
