The Caretakers

While the Infinites themselves no longer seem to manifest in the Shards, they have left behind more than just their potent magical influence. Rather, the remnant Shards of the Nerasa-That-Was are dotted and busied with the various ruined remnants of the Infinites and their servants. These ruins not only give proof of the Infinites’ influence, but also tell the story of their creation.

Most prominent on Nerasa are the remnants of the Caretakers.

Caretakers of the Divine

Sometimes called the Builders, or the First Children, the Caretakers are the Infinites first living creation, and were - presumably - spawned to facilitate the many varied and intricate tasks of building Nerasa per the wishes of their creators. While they certainly took this purpose to heart, the Caretakers were not so single minded that they had no culture of their own. Rather, they had massive cities, rich with culture - be it artwork, architecture, or immense libraries. Many consider this, too, to be part of the Infinites' goal.

Day by day, the Caretakers saw to the ambitions of the Infinite they directly served. Those who saw themselves in service to Ataros built the cities and great facilities whose ruins now still dot the shattered remains of the world, while those in service to Magristos wove complex spellwork into the fabric of the world, and the Caretakers of Estilas nurtured and cultivated the early forms of life that now inhabit the shards.

The Remains of the Caretakers

When the world shattered, most - if not all - of the Caretakers were believed to be destroyed. In their wake, however, countless structures remain as testament to their lives and creations. From the more immense facilities such as the Tidehold in Vasselern, to smaller installations found in the caverns of Berus, the ruins of the Caretakers stand as a physical testament to the existence of not just the Caretakers, but the Infinites that created and ruled over them.

All knowledge of the Infinites possessed by modern society was gleaned from the writings and depictions made in Caretaker ruins, leading to extensive advancements in not just an understanding of the Infinites and their workings, but also the laws and practises of the Arcane, and the myriad magitechnical technologies the Caretakers made regular use of.

Most prevalent of these discoveries was the Wrought themselves - a sentient species of mechanical beings that seemed to serve as support workers for the Caretakers. Now granted independence and control over their own destiny, they stand as the last living remnant of the era of the Infinites.

Today, explorers and adventurers alike continue to explore the Shards in the hope of finding new and untouched Caretaker facilities - hoping to glean knowledge of new technologies, Infinite histories, or even discover more Wrought in hibernation.
